Electricity and Water Sector
During the prosperous era of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, significant efforts have been made to develop this sector. These initiatives focus on meeting the needs of all relevant parties by diversifying resources, modernizing and expanding distribution stations, and promoting environmental sustainability.

Extensive efforts have been witnessed during the prosperous era of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, to develop the electricity and water sector in response to the needs of residents, commercial, and industrial institutions. These efforts aim to diversify resources, modernise, and expand electricity and water distribution stations, and achieve environmental sustainability.
In 2005, the privatisation of the electricity and water production sector was implemented, proving successful in enhancing operational efficiency and accelerating the repair of water leaks. In 2007, the energy isolation station was commissioned, featuring various facilities located in the Salman Port industrial area, and it operates using gas turbines in a combined cycle.
In 2008, the third phase of the Hidd Electricity and Water Production Station was inaugurated. In 2011, the announcement of the Gulf Electricity Interconnection was made, which is one of the most significant infrastructure connectivity projects approved by the Gulf Cooperation Council, aimed at sustainably supporting energy in the Gulf states and reducing energy production costs.
Subsequently, in 2012, Law Decree No. (47) of 2012 was issued to establish and regulate the Supreme Council for the Environment, which is tasked with protecting the natural and human environment of the Kingdom of Bahrain, ensuring the sustainability of its elements, and preserving and developing its resources for future generations. The Council also works to promote environmental awareness among citizens and residents, enhance green environmental values, support sustainable development, encourage the use of environmentally friendly technologies, and strengthen community participation in environmental preservation.
That same year, Phase 1 of the Dilmun Electricity and Water Production Station was inaugurated. This project represents a significant investment partnership between the public and private sectors, created to meet the increasing demand for electricity and to keep pace with housing, urban, and industrial projects being implemented in various regions of the Kingdom.
In 2021, a new control centre for electricity and water networks was opened, which contributes to maintaining the continuity of services provided by the Electricity and Water Authority with quality and reliability, achieving the desired goals aimed at sustaining electrical energy in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
In 2022, Phase 2 of the Dilmun Electricity and Water Production Station was inaugurated, representing an extension of the Dilmun 1 project. This highlights the commitment to continue enhancing energy efficiency and increasing the production capacity of electricity and water, in parallel with priorities and programs targeting the enhancement of developmental work and advancing it towards more advanced fields, while addressing new development projects aimed at confronting climate change challenges and protecting the environment, in accordance with the highest global standards to achieve sustainable development goals.
In 2024, coinciding with the celebration of the silver jubilee marking the 25th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s ascension to the throne, the Khalifa City Water Distribution Station was inaugurated. This aims to secure water and energy resources and deliver them to subscribers according to the best practices and specifications in use, utilizing the latest devices and technologies.
